PROGRAM OFFICER, FARM RADIO INTERNATIONAL Ottawa Impact Program Manager, Farm Radio International 3 days-week, 24 months Competitive, with good benefits package June 10, 2013
BACKGROUND: Farm Radio International (www.farmradio.org) is a Canadian registered charity with regional offices in Ghana, Tanzania, Ethiopia and Mali, that is at the forefront of using radio combined with other ICTs to serve smallholder farmers. FRI works with African radio broadcasters to enable them to provide smallscale farmers and rural communities with effective and interactive rural radio services. We send information about low-cost ways to improve food security to 360 radio stations across 39 countries. Our packages – in French and English – cover topics from improving soil fertility to coping with climate change. Local broadcasters value this information, and translate it into over one hundred African languages. We offer an electronic news service to over 1000 African subscribers, and we provide training to broadcasters to improve their skills in serving smallholders. We are currently implementing and evaluating a variety of innovative approaches in Ghana, Malawi, Tanzania, Uganda and Mali. These approaches include: participatory radio campaigns, innovative market information services, and the creative use of ICTs such as SMS messaging and Interactive Voice Response systems to engage more farmers.
