JOB SUMMARY:
As Right To Play works to support countries in reaching the MDG’s, one of its key foci is promoting gender equality. Right To Play Toronto is recruiting one Gender Specialist. Working in close collaboration with the International Programs Team and Field Teams, and under the direct supervision of the Senior Director, International Programs, the Gender Specialist will guide Right To Play program design and proposals in translating Right To Play’s commitment towards gender equality into concrete and measurable actions, with particular attention to capacity development. The goal of the Gender Specialist is to work with field teams and staff at HQ to ensure that organizational policies, program design, program plans and funding proposals are all built with a strategy towards promoting gender equality and positive social change.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Job Responsibility #1: Provide technical support to field teams and the International Programs team in the promotion of gender equality throughout the program design, development and implementation process (40% of Time):
• Identify and research current gender intervention strategies and programs to position Right To Play’s sport for development programs.
• Assist with needs assessments and provide technical advice.
• Ensure a systematic approach to Right To Play’s principles of inclusion.
• Ensure data is collected and used in the design and formulation of project and program strategies and advise on strategies that reflect the needs of women and girls, men and boys.
• Ensure gender responsive implementation of project and program strategies
• Advise how to engage women and girls more fully in the development processes that affect their livelihoods and their lives, as well as how to promote positive masculinity and engage men and boys in social change processes.
• Advise on allocation of project and program budgets for gender focused programs.
• Advice and support International Programs in their efforts to attract new donors and write funding proposals.
• Ensure quarterly reporting on progress against the project strategies, with information on achievements, challenges and areas of support needed.
• Compile/extract relevant information from project strategies, challenges and successes for the annual/mid-term reports.
Job Responsibility #2: Support the Development of a 5 year Gender Strategy for the organization (30% of Time):
• In consultation with field teams and HQ international Programs team, and in line with the Global 2013-2017 organizational Strategy, develop a 5 year gender stratrategy for the organization.
• Develop objectives, actions and indicators (and logical framework) for the 5 year gender strategy.
• Disseminate the strategy and follow up with all the regions to monitor advancement, support needed, best practices.
Job Responsibility #3: Provide training and capacity development in support of gender equality (20% of Time):
• Identify training needs in gender focused areas and develop concrete capacity development plans.
• Support the preparation of/or dissemination of toolkits, training manuals and checklists for each focus area/sector, particularly for the Middle East, Asia, East and West Africa.
• Support training team in organizing workshops on relevant topics that focus on changing knowledge, attitudes and behavior towards women and girls, men and boys.
Job Responsibility #4: Support partnerships with CSO and NGO agencies and knowledge Management (10% of Time):
• Ensure engagement with civil society organizations working in gender equality.
• Work with the Advocacy team to create advocacy and communication materials to promote gender equality and human rights and across the organization.
• Work closely with international, national and UN agencies on issues of gender and empowerment.
• Participate and share information with Right To Play’s knowledge networks.
• Liaise with Regional Staff (Regional Directors, Regional Training Officers, Regional M&E Officers) in order to share information / best practices.
EDUCATION/TRAINING/CERTIFICATION:
Required (must have):
• Master’s Degree or equivalent in International Development Studies, Gender Studies, Education, or related discipline.
• Courses completed in project management or business management is an asset.
EXPERIENCE
Required (must have):
• 5-7 years of working experience at the international level.
• 5-7 years of experience in dealing with issues of women's rights and gender equality within public institutions, UN agencies and/or international system.
• Hands-on experience in designing development projects and programs with a gender lens.
• Proven experience in program and project management.
• Experience with monitoring and evaluation of programs with a gender lens.
• An understanding of humanitarian, development and gender issues that is particular to Right To Play project locations.
• Familiarity with and experience in quantitative andqualitative participatory research methods.
• Ability to travel (15 – 20%).
IT KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS REQUIRED:
• Comfortable with software applications required to collaborate across a global organization.
• Strong computer literacy in Outlook, Word, Excel, and Power Point.
• Research and writing proposal/report skills.
• Ability to work on gender in a range of cultural contexts and link gender to other forms of oppression such as poverty and racism.
• Demonstrates knowledge of development through a gender lens.
• Ability to lead strategic planning, results-based management and reporting.
• Ability to support the formulation, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of development programs and projects using a gender lens.
• Ability to lead implementation of new systems and affect staff behavioral/ attitudinal change.

LANGUAGE SKILLS
• High level of proficiency in written and oral English
• Knowledge of French, Spanish, Mandarin and/or Arabic is desirable.
